Age of Empyre is the sixth and final book in the Legends of the First Empire series. It is set in the same world as the Riyria books but takes place thousands of years before those events. It is a multiple perspective story. As this is the last book in the series, I won’t be going into any details about the plot to avoid spoilers.
One of the main strengths of this series continues to be the character development. Sullivan once again delivers fantastic character development in this last instalment. There are a lot of characters within this story and each and every one of them is well written. I love that all of the characters are full of depth and that they all have flaws – none of them are perfect. Suri continues to be my favourite character and I would love to see more of her, even if it’s just a short story focusing on her character. The plot was compelling throughout and I loved the direction Sullivan took it in. If you’ve read the Riyria books, then you kind of know the outcome but it was so interesting to actually read it happening. Once again, the writing is great and I found it so easy to settle back into this world. It had been a while since I read the last book and I wasn’t sure if I remembered much, but after reading the first chapter I didn’t have any issues slipping back into this world. Speaking of, the world building is another strength. The world is a vivid one and Sullivan continues to do a fantastic job at weaving the history of the world into the story.
Overall this was a fantastic last instalment to this series and I would highly recommend checking it out, if you haven’t started this series already. The first book in a new standalone series set in the same world is set to be released sometime this year and I will definitely be checking it out. Have you guys read this book/series? I do like MJS and this is a really good series. But at the same time the plot (early civilization, humans vs Fhrey) doesn’t grab me. I will finish though.
