Fantasy Favourites: Animal Companions

Hi guys, I hope you are all well. If you didn’t already know, I love animal companions in fantasy books. Last year I started a series where a share my favourite things within the fantasy genre, so today I wanted share my favourite animal companions – I have six favourites to share with you guys. I’m sorry I’ve missed a few posts recently, hopefully I’m back to regular scheduling now. Let’s get started.

Storm / The Faithful and the Fallen series / John Gwynne

Storm is a wolven, a huge wolf-like animal who is large enough to be ridden. Storm is one of my favourite parts of this series and is one of my all time favourite animal companions.

Disreputable Dog / Old Kingdom trilogy / Garth Nix

The Disreputable Dog is the companion of Lirael in the last two books in the Old Kingdom. She is a creature of both Charter and Free magic, and takes the form of a dog. Mogget is also a fantastic animal companion from this trilogy.

Mephis / The Drowning Empire trilogy / Andrea Stewart

Mephis is a mysterious fox-like creature with magical powers and the ability to talk, who becomes a companion to one of the main protagonists, Jovis.

Nighteyes / Realm of the Elderling series / Robin Hobb

Nighteyes is a wolf and the Wit bond partner of Fitz – there relationship is one of my favourite things about this series. . Nighteyes is introduced in the second book in the Farseer trilogy.

Leelan / The Beast Player / Nahoko Uehashi

Leelan is a Royal Beast, which is a griffin-like creature with the head of a wolf. The protagonist of this book, Elin, meets an infant Leelan at an animal sanctuary.

Wolf / The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness series / Michelle Paver

As you can probably tell from his name, Wolf is a wolf. He becomes Torak’s pack brother, after Torak saves him in the first book of this series.

That’s it for today. If a fantasy book is pitched as having an animal companion, I will 100% be more inclined to read it – basically can we please have more animal companions in fantasy books please?! Hopefully I’m not missing any off this list – let me know if you think I am. Do you guys love animal companions? Let’s chat in the comments. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
