In the Labyrinth of Drakes is the fourth book in the Lady Trent series, which is a low fantasy series that follows Isabella Camherst, aka Lady Trent, in her quest to study and understand dragons. In this instalment we get to explore the scorching desert of Akhia when Isabella is brought in the study the breeding habits of the desert drakes. The fantastic cover art is by Todd Lockwood.

 

This instalment is my favourite of the series so far. It places you right back into the world and the action starts from pretty early on. It had been a while since I read the previous instalment in the series so I had wondered if it would take me a some time to get into it again, but that was not the case. It was so easy to settle back into the story and world. I love Isabella as a protagonist and Brennan continues to develop her character incredibly well. She is such an interesting character and her fight against prejudice against her gender continues to be an issue in this instalment. Isabella relies on her intelligence and knowledge about dragons to achieve her dreams and to prove to those who doubt her that she should not be ignored. Another strength of this instalment, and series in general, is the world building. For each book, Brennan has brought us, the reader, to new places as Isabella widens her knowledge on dragons. In this instalment we get to explore a whole new area of the world – the scorching desert of Akhia. Alongside the new terrain, we get a look into the culture of the place too. The world building is so well done and I cannot wait to see where the final instalment goes next. 

 

Overall this was a fantastic instalment and my favourite one of the series so far. The characters continue to be so well written, the plot is compelling and the world is a vivid one. I cannot wait to check out the fifth and final book in this series. There is also a spin off book that follows Lady Trent’s granddaughter, Turning Darkness into Light. Have you guys read this book?
