A Dead Djinn in Cairo is set in an alternate Cairo in 1912 and follows Special Investigator Fatma el-Sha’arawi, who is tasked with investigating the death of a djinn. The world is one of my favourite things about this novella. Clark has created this wonderfully vivid and atmospheric steampunk setting. Fatma is a fantastic protagonist and the plot is compelling throughout. The writing is great and I found it so easy to settle into the flow of the story. This was my first book by this author and I will definitely be checking out his other works.
The Haunting of Tram Car 015 / P. Djèlí Clark / ★★★★

This one returns us to the supernatural alternate Cairo, but this time we’re following the investigation of a haunted tram car by Agents Hamad al-Nasr and Onsi. First of all I love the setting of these novellas and I loved that I got to explore it more in this story. I really enjoyed the dynamics between the two new agents and all of the characters were well written. This is probably my favourite of the two, just because I really enjoyed this story of the haunted tram.
That’s it for today. I really enjoyed both of these novellas so I hope the author is planning to write more stories set in this world. A full length novel set in this world, A Master of Djinn, is set to be released next year, which I am very excited for. Have you guys read these novellas? I’d love to know what you thought.
