The Black God’s Drums is a novella set in New Orleans. It follows a thirteen girl called Creeper, who is accompanied by Oya, an African orisha (spirit) of wind and storms. Creeper wants to leave the streets of New Orleans and her chance appears when Captain Ann-Marie arrives in her smuggler airship, Midnight Robber.
This is such a fantastic novella that melds elements of fantasy, science fiction and steampunk together. I didn’t know much about this one going in, but I’m really glad I picked it up. This was such an enjoyable, quick read and the characters are so well written. I sometimes find with new authors it can take me a little while to settle into their writing style but I didn’t have that issue with this book. From the very start, I was invested in the characters and the story. Creeper and Ann-Marie are amazing characters and I would love to see more of them. Despite the short length, the world is quite a vivid one and Clark does a great job at creating atmosphere throughout the novella. Basically this is an amazing story and I would highly recommend it.
Overall I really enjoyed this novella and I can’t wait to check out the author’s other works. I would definitely recommend reading this novella. Have you guys read this? I’d love to know what you thought. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
I’ve been wanting to read this for such a long time, I’m glad you liked it!
