This is the second book in the Coraidic saga. It takes place four years after the events of the first book, Blood of Heirs. Like book 1, this instalment is a dual perspective fantasy story that follows Lidan and Ranoth. While their stories remained separate in the first book, the two story-lines merge together in this book. As this is a sequel, I won’t be going into any details about the plot to avoid spoilers.
After really enjoying the first book, I had high hopes for this sequel and I am happy to say that this didn’t disappoint. It was great to be back in this world and with these characters. Wanstall-Burke does a fantastic job at building on what was established in the first book. The character development is so well done and the expansion of the world gives the reader more context around the story and world. The stakes are heightened in this sequel and the author has done a great job at maintaining the tension throughout the book. Despite the time shift, the story continues seamlessly from the first instalment. I find that sometimes when sequels start years after the previous book it can feel a little disjointed but that wasn’t the case with this one.
I think you can really see that Wanstall-Burke is improving as an author. This sequel felt more assured and she’s done an awesome job continuing the story. The plot is more action packed then book 1, but at it’s core the trilogy still remains a character driven story. There are some very well written action scenes in this book. I loved how the author converged the two story-lines and thoroughly enjoyed every second of reading it.
Overall this was a fantastic sequel and I cannot wait to see how things conclude in the next instalment. Empire of Shadows (book 3) is set to be released some time next year. If you haven’t started this trilogy yet, I highly recommend checking it out. Have you guys read this book? I’d love to know what you thought. Let’s chat in the comments. I hope you are all having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
I’m really loving this series!
