This is the second book in the Theonite series and follows closely after the events of the first book, Theonite: Planet Adyn. Like the first book, this instalment is narrated through the voice of Joan Messi, although a few more character perspectives are added in this sequel. Since this is a sequel I will not be going into any details surrounding the plot to avoid spoilers.

First of all, it was great to be back in this world and with these characters. I loved the first book, so I had high hopes for this sequel and I’m happy to say it didn’t disappoint. One of the main things I loved about this instalment is the world building. You get to explore more of the world and learn a lot more about the cultures of Duna, but it never felt overwhelming and it isn’t info-dumped onto the reader. Duna is a planet that closely resembles Earth in a parallel dimension – I don’t want to say much else because I think it’s so much better finding out about this world yourself as you read the books. Just know that the world building is fantastic and I cannot wait to see more of it in the next book.

The characters are all well written, with distinctive voices and interesting personalities. Joan remains a fantastic female protagonist and I loved the development of her relationship with Daniel. A lot of new characters are introduced in this sequel and they all add depth to the story and world. It was great to see certain characters that I knew of from reading The Sword of Kaigen. The development of new friendships was so well done and I loved the focus on the importance of friendship. Overall all of the characters are so well written and I can’t wait to see more of them.

At over 500 pages long, this is a fantasy book on the longer side and there isn’t a whole lot of plot in this instalment. That isn’t a bad thing though, because it allows the focus to be on the characters and the world. Having said that, I found this book to be compelling throughout and I thought that Wang did a fantastic job at balancing between action scenes and quieter scenes where we can focus on the characters and the world. I loved this sequel and I cannot wait to see where things go next in the third book.

Overall I loved this second instalment in the Theonite series and I cannot wait for the third book. Theonite: City of Ghosts is set to be released sometime next year (2020). If you haven’t checked out this series yet, then I highly recommend you do. Also, if you’ve read and loved The Sword of Kaigen then I highly recommend this too.
