3 Film Reviews

Hi guys, I hope you are all doing well. For this post, I am going to be sharing my thoughts on 3 films. Now I am pretty late to the band wagon with these films, but I wanted to share some of my thoughts with you guys anyway – I hope you don’t mind. So the three films are Star Trek: Beyond, Suicide Squad and Batman vs. Superman. All of the pictures used are not my own. Onto some of my thoughts.

Suicide Squad:
Let’s start off with the film I saw first. When watching this, I really enjoyed it. It definitely wasn’t entirely what I expected, after watching the trailer, but I enjoyed it. I thought the acting was pretty good – Viola Davis is an incredible as the kind of mental and cruel Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie was so good as Harley Quinn and I thought Will Smith did a good job portraying Deadshot. The other guys were good as well but those three performances really stood out to me. I’m kind of a bit mixed about the Joker – we don’t really get to see him and I found that kind of disappointing. I think Jared Leto’s performance has potential but I wasn’t blown away by it. I felt it was perhaps a bit over the top. However I don’t really feel I can judge his characterisation as we see so little of him. Although I am intrigued by the character of Katana, I didn’t really understand her place in the film – she just kind of turns up and is angry/sad. In terms of the plot, in my opinion it is kind of all over the place. They were trying to fit too much into a not very long film. I was also disappointed with the villain – I was so excited because the trailer makes it seem that the Joker is the main villain of the film but that is not the case. To be honest that would have made a better film, in my opinion, but that is not the case with this film. The story, as well is the editing,  was a bit choppy and even a little confused at times – to me it just felt kind of messy. Overall I enjoyed this film but it wasn’t perfect and I was a little disappointed by it.

Star Trek Beyond:
Now I have loved the new Star Trek films, so I was so excited to see this. In some ways, I found it a little bit disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I did very much enjoy watching this film, but it wasn’t perfect. My main issue with it was the villain. I thought his motivations were extremely weak and I just didn’t feel like it was a well developed villain – it did get a little better towards the end of the film when he is given more depth and we learn more about his motivations. Idris Elba is a great actor though. Once again Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the cast are great in their respective roles. I enjoyed the development of the characters and the introduction of some new ones – I especially liked the scenes with Spock and McCoy. I though the humour was done very well. I personally think this is the weakest of the three Star Trek films currently out and this film doesn’t have such a compelling villain as Benedict Cumberbatch was in Star Trek: Into Darkness. However, like I said, it was a blast to watch at the cinema. Overall this was a very fun and entertaining film to watch, but I can’t help feeling a little bit disappointed with it.

Batman Vs. Superman:
This was a long one. For me, it took some time to get into it. I thought Ben Affleck actually did a great job of his portrayal of Batman and I look forward to seeing more from him. One thing that bugged me about Batman though is that he is killing people left, right and centre. I thought Batman had morals but apparently he’s given up on them and just kills people now. Don’t get me wrong I could see Batman starting to kill people if some tragic event occurred but we get no explanation as to why his morals no longer apply. Henry Cavill as Superman was fine, but it didn’t blow me away. Lois Lane was just kind of there – it’s liked they wanted her in the film, but couldn’t think of a reason for her to be there. I loved Gal Gabot as Wonder woman – I thought she nailed it. I am now super excited about her solo film. Anyway overall I enjoyed this film, but it had issues. First off I hasn’t a huge fan of the villain (Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor) I thought the portrayal was a little over the top and it just didn’t really make sense to me. Throughout the film, I kept questioning these superheroes intelligence – how could they so easily be manipulated to fight each other? Anyway, visually the film is amazing, but I can’t help feeling that work on the story was sacrificed because of it. The story is pretty choppy and confused. By the end of the film, I felt I had watched two very different films that had been mixed together. The Justice League set up was a bit lazy – I mean seriously? An email? Overall I thought there were some great performances in this film and the visuals are amazing, but it is definitely messy. I still liked and I would recommend giving it a watch, especially if you are a big Batman or Superman fan.

I would love to know your thoughts on any or all of these films. I am interested to see what other people thought of them. I know I am totally late with all these release but I wanted to post this anyway. I am thinking I may try out some more film reviews, as I love watching them. I hope you are having a wonderful day and I will see you next time.
