Top 5 Wednesday was originally created and run by Lainey aka gingerreadslainey (Youtube channel) but it is now being run by Sam aka Thoughts on tomes (Youtube channel). Each week there is a different topic. You can check out the groups Goodreads page here for any more information and the future topics. Before I get started with my list, I just wanted to say that these are in no particular order because I’m rubbish at choosing favourites or in this case least favourites. Onto the topic of unlikable characters – so characters that weren’t necessarily written to be unlikable. Another quick note is that I apologise in advance if I offend you with some of my choose – I know one in particular is extremely well loved but these are my opinions, so let’s get started.
-
Celaena Sardothien from the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas – let’s start off with that very popular character 🙂 I’m sure there is a mob on it’s way right now, but I’m just being honest with you guys. I do not understand the love of this character and series. To me, she is vain, arrogant, immature, petty, judgemental, selfish, fickle, shallow etc. I could go on but I’ll leave it at that. She is the most frustrating/infuriating character I think I have ever come across!
-
Magnus Damora from the Falling Kingdom series by Morgan Rhodes – this is another popular series and character that I personally don’t get. I found Magnus to be an absolute arsehole – sorry if the language offends you but that is the best way to describe him. He is extremely annoying and self absorbed – I only read the first two books but the majority of the time he just mopes around, pining for a certain girl. Seriously dude, get over yourself!
-
Mr Collins from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – I probably don’t need to say much about this one. If you’ve read the book or seen any adaptation, then you will know exactly what I mean. He is definitely not the most likeable character.
-
Agnieszka from Uprooted by Naomi Novik – This one isn’t really that she is unlikable but she is kind of frustrating. She’s ‘special’ and the fact that this is one of her defining feature (as well as her clumsiness) is kind of annoying. In my opinion she is really underdeveloped – her character just really didn’t work for me. A lot of people love this book and series though.
-
Nevare Burvelle from the Soldier’s Son trilogy by Robin Hobb – Now I have only read Shaman’s Crossing which is book 1, but I just found him to be quite a frustrating narrator. I read this a while a go now but I remember finding Nevare annoying at times and I question some of his actions/decisions – his naivete was at times frustrating as well. I think I will continue on with the series at some point, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I would, of course, mention Regal and Kyle Haven (from the Farseer trilogy and the Liveship Trader’s trilogy), but I feel like they were both written to be unlikable so they don’t really apply. Regal and Kyle are both extremely unlikable so I thought I’d quickly mention them anyway :).
There you have it – 5 unlikable characters. Again I am sorry if I offended anyone with my choices but I am just being honest with my opinions. It is not my intention to stop people reading any of these books either. This was a really great topic to do and I actually had a bit of trouble thinking up some unlikable characters that weren’t meant to be unlikable. Let me know in the comments if you agree with me on any of these or just share some of your unlikable characters. I hope you are having a wonderful day.
See you next time
Pippa
I 100% agree with your comments about Celaena. I don’t get how she could be this notorious assassin, you know? She never gave me the impression that she was on book 1. She gets better on book 2, but why would I even want to read book 2 if I can’t get through book 1. Gaaaah!!!

I know! I did read books 1 and 2 – I tried reading book 3 but I gave up! She is just so infuriating! Glad I am not the only one 🙂

likewise! 🙂 I was pretty upset that I couldn’t get with the hype though. I like talking to people about books and most of my friends like this book and rave about it. I’m always like “uhuh”… left out. Hehe.
Thanks for the response and I’ll see you around. 🙂
